Wether you are preparing for medical school, residency, fellowship or post-residency job interviews, it is important to look the part because first impressions are everything.
During my medical school interviews I invested in one black suit, it had a blazer and skirt and I wore a white blouse under. I also invested in small black heels. For residency interviews I have invested in two suits (dark grey and navy blue).
For interviews in general, I recommend trying your best if finances allow to invest in at least 2 suits. For women, the suits can be in a variety of pairings, such as, a blazer with a skirt, a blazer with slacks or a dress with a blazer. I personally like pairing a blazer with a skirt or slacks. Also depending on the location you are interviewing in and the weather and time of the year you may choose your suit selection based off that. For example you may want to wear slacks instead of a dress or skirt if you are going to areas with colder climates or the opposite if you are heading to places with warmer weather. I would choose suits that are on the darker side such as navy blue, black, and dark grey. For your shoes, I would choose heels that are on the smaller size and more modest, try and stray away from large heels like stilettos. No matter what you are interviewing for, you can guarantee there will be a tour and you want to ensure your feet are comfortable. In regards to hair, makeup and accessories, I would use your best judgement, but of course you can’t go wrong with a more modest look. For men, I advise if you can, investing in two suits as well that are on the darker side such as navy blue, black, or dark grey suit.
For great deals on suits, I would check out departments stores. I was able to snag two suits with skirts and slacks as well as 2 blouses (blue and white) for $130 at JC Penny’s. I had a coupon for students and they also had a great sale! Check out a department store near you and see if they have any great deals. Also visit any stores that have suits only and of course stores like TJ Maxx, Marshalls or H & M will have suits as well that you can check out.
